What Every Parent Should Do When They Find Out Their Child Is Gay

A must read story.

It all began when Reddit user HeMeYou borrowed his 13 year old son's iPad. He snooped around and discovered Google searches in the lines of "I'm gay what now?" and realized he was ill-equipped to handle such a situation. What would a straight guy do when he finds out that his son is gay? What is the proper reaction? How would he move forward?

He did what other modern guy would do. He took the internet and posted the following questions:

I love him regardless of which gender he loves, in fact when I was slightly older than him I had a few flings with guys, which he doesn’t know about, so I am 100% supportive. He has seemed slightly down recently, as in, he isn’t as cheerful as he once was, and I desperately want to tell him that I love him regardless of which sexuality he is.

What are my options? Should I wait for him to tell me? Or should I make a few hints at it?
I’m worried that if I don’t hint at it, that he will be worried about something that he really doesn’t have to be worried about… if that makes sense.

It comes to no surprise that this message got a lot of responses. Too many people out there who had a similar experience, or wished that their parents were thoughtful enough to have sought the help of other people. Super Dad got a lot of love from commenters and Reddit users, and he quickly became the person that every parent with a gay child should aspire to be. Here are some of the responses:

After hearing from everybody, it looks like he had a success story to share. He posted this update for all his followers to see:

Firstly, I’d just like to thank all of you who commented and gave me advice on the previous post, and because the post got so much attention I thought it wouldn’t be fair for me not to make an update.
As many comments suggested that I do, is to slightly hint toward the notion that I am perfectly happy with having a gay son, while letting him do the work in actually saying the words “I’m gay”, and I thought that was a very good idea.

I started off with talking about general media with him, for instance I mentioned how awesome it was that Tim Cook (CEO of Apple) came out as being gay and I asked him what he thought about it and I was completely expecting him to give a typical teenager response like “yeah.. its good” or something like that but he actually gave me a detailed response which I absolutely loved because for the first time in a good while I’ve actually held a conversation with my son that felt really… rewarding.

I also wanted to talk to him about how I’ve noticed that he’s not been acting as cheerful as he usually has and I sort of gave the cliche spiel of “I love you no matter what and I just want to see you be happy” but I didn’t get much of a response that time apart from “yeah I know..”

The next day as I picked him up from school I thought I’d ask him about any crushes he has, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t say a gender when I asked him, so instead of ‘he’ or ‘she’ I used ‘they’ etc.. Here is that conversation as I remember it…

Me: So, do you have a crush on anyone?
Son: Uhm… no..m..maybe..
Me: Ohhh so who is the lucky person?
At this point he sort of looked at me slightly confused, I’m not 100% sure why, but I’m assuming it is because I said “lucky person” rather than “lucky girl”.
Son: Just someone from my french class…
Me: Oh yeah… so what do you like about them?
Son: Just.. stuff..
Me: Okay.. but.. like what?
Son: I donno they’re just kinda funny I guess…

At this point I dropped the conversation but just before I did I told him “Well, whoever it is, they should be so lucky to have you as a boyfriend..” and while I didn’t see it, I certainly felt as though he was rolling his eyes at my cheesy comments.

At the dinner table the same day, while we were eating we had a couple minutes of silence, not much was heard apart from the cutlery and my son finally said “I actually wanted to tell you something in the car, but I was afraid you’d get in an accident..” I looked up from my plate and looked at him straight in the eyes… I could see he was thinking about something and all I could think of was “OMG this is it…” he said “Dad..” with a couple seconds of silence “..I’m gay”. I looked at him and couldn’t help myself from smiling, and I told him “____, you know I love you so much… right?” and I got up and gave him a huge hug. He even started to cry on my shoulder and because of that I couldn’t help myself but shed a couple tears. We talked for a bit while finishing our dinner about how I can’t emphasize enough that I love him regardless of which gender he loves etc…

After dinner and after he finished his homework we both lay in our pajamas on the sofa, while I was watching the Cooking Channel and he was playing on his iPad. I had my arm around him and he was leaning his head on my chest, and all I could think of was that I’m the happiest father on earth right now.

Thank you all so much for your feedback and suggestions on the last post. All of you are so kind on this subreddit, so many of you sent me PM’s explaining how I was a super dad and it honestly brightened my day.

For those curious as to what I will be doing next, I’ve already started doing some research in LGBT Youth Communities and I think joining one would be a perfect start to helping my son develop into the person he has the potential to being.

In my opinion, it will just make the "secretions" taste weird. But I suppose it's something that everyone can get used to eating, perhaps after a heavy meal.

The U.S. bishops seem to be sending out a message that they are not on board with how Pope Francis deals with homosexuality. And they are letting the pope know that they believe homophobia equates to Catholicism, in a manner of speaking.

The bishops are meeting in Baltimore for their annual jamboree, and part of the agenda is the battle brewing between the bishops and the beloved Pope Francis. After the Vatican synod last month, some bishops are mad that the pope seems to have abandoned the "hardcore homophobia" that the Church has espoused for centuries.

John Thavis, a former Rome bureau chief for Catholic News Service had this to say: “Many of the U.S. bishops have been disoriented by what this new pope is saying and I don’t see them really as embracing the pope’s agenda.” 

Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, RI, on the other hand, said that the synod was “rather Protestant.” Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, said that the synod created confusion about Church teaching. He further stated that “I think confusion is of the devil.” Cardinal Raymond Burke, former archbishop of St. Louis, said that the Church is risking a schism by moving “contrary to the constant teaching and practice of the Church.”

The pope, however, showed them who's boss. Queerty has this report:

Pope Francis sent the bishops a strong signal about where he stands by formally demoting Burke just two days before the bishops met. The pope busted Burke to the ceremonial position of protectorate of the Knights of Malta. The move was a brutal reminder of just who holds the power in the Church.
Some of the bishops have been trying to paper over the differences by madly spinning the press.

“What I heard and read, the real synod was divisive, confrontational, partisan, and dwelt only on same sex-marriage, cohabitation and divorce,” New York’s Timothy Dolan said Monday. “In fact it was plodding, even at times tedious, but it was a synod of consensus.”

Dolan is going to have to revisit that statement in the confessional, because it’s clearly untrue. The document that the synod originally floated was much more pro-gay. It was watered down because the conservative bishops, many of them from the U.S., blew a gasket. That’s not the definition of consensus.

The fact is, the landscape for the U.S. bishops has changed, and they don’t know how to deal with it.
“It used to be your career in the church could be advanced if you took a hard stance on issues,” the Rev. James Bretzke, a professor of moral theology at Boston College, told the Boston Herald. “Pope Francis wants people who are more bridge builders instead of bridge burners.”

That won’t stop the hard-core homophobes from taking a few more bridges with them before they go. They’re probably hoping that the pope is standing on one of them.

Looks like things are about to change, hopefully for the better.

It's established that Russia is one of the worst countries to live in as far as gay people are concerned, and it goes without saying that their anti-gay laws are discriminatory and backward. That's why news of the country's first ever LEGALLY married same-sex couple has taken the world by storm!

The lesbian couple, Irina Shumilova and Alyona Fursova, somehow managed to get legally married in a nation where same-sex union is illegal.

Here's the report from Yahoo! News:

The marriage on Friday went through because one of the women was born male but is now transgender and undergoing hormone therapy, said Anna Anisimova, an activist working with Vykhod, an LGBT rights group in Saint-Petersburg.

"The official registration by two women happened because one of them is a man according to the documents," she said. "Formally it was a wedding between a man and a woman but de-facto it was between two women."

"It was the first (LGBT wedding) in Russia. Both brides wore white dresses."

Way to beat the system! And according to reports, there were no efforts from the registry office to stop the nuptials. Looks like we have some people there who are ready to stand up against bigotry and hatred!

Russian legislator Vitaly Milonov, a proponent of Russia's anti-gay propaganda law, has however expressed he's working on getting the marriage annulled.

BBC reports:

Mr Milonov - one of the most ardent supporters of the 2013 law - told Russian media the staff at the registry office should be tried for treason or criminal negligence.

He would seek the marriage's annulment to avoid "an ugly insult to millions of Russian families in the future", he added.

"There are certain moral standards which it is vital to implement," he said. "These mad people should be banned altogether from getting married."

Goodluck with that. If we are talking technicalities, the Russian government does not recognize gender change. So technically, we are still dealing with a union between a "man" and a "woman." Treating this marriage as illegal would mean that they will be recognizing the gender change. So it looks like a stale mate.

We all know what the Ku Klux Klan is all about: supremacy and discrimination. Among other things. But news of a KKK member's recruitment of "diverse" membership caught my attention today.

John Abarr, a Ku Klux Klan member from Montana, made it known that he is recruiting members for an "all-new, all-inclusive KKK, one that will not discriminate against people because of their race, religion or sexual orientation."

Abarr was quoted saying: “The KKK is for a strong America. White supremacy is the old Klan. This is the new Klan.”

The Great Falls Tribune reported that Abarr has dubbed the group as the "Rocky Mountain Knights." It will be a non-discriminatory chapter of the KKK, and will seek to fight against a “new world order.” Members are still required to wear the infamous white robes and hoods. They will also participate in “secret rituals.” What they won't do, however, will be burning down churches or lynching people.

The KKK leadership is reportedly not pleased with Abarr's move. Embracing gay and black people, after all, is tantamount to spitting at the graves of the organization's founding fathers. Bradley Jenkins, KKK Imperial Wizard, said: “That man’s going against everything the bylaws of the constitution of the KKK say. He’s trying to hide behind the KKK to further his political career.”

Even Human Rights leaders are fazed by this move. One such leader, Rachel Carroll-Rivas, said: “They know that their beliefs aren’t popular, so they try to appear moderate. I think it’s just a farce. If John Abarr was actually reformed, he could drop the label of the KKK.”

A quick reminder of what Charmed actress Rose McGowan said about the LGBT community:


"I see now basically people who've fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange speedo and take molly (MDMA). And I see no help, and I see no paying it forward, and I have a huge problem with that. ... There are so many things to help and do, and I see no extending of a hand outside of the gay community to another community, and that's a problem for me. Gays are as misogynistic (as straight men), if not more so. ... I have an indictment of the gay community right now; I'm actually really upset with them."

Obviously, the gay community wasn't very happy about this, and Rose got some not-so-nice comments about it. So now, she goes to Twitter and "apologizes" for the things she said.

 "Misogyny endangers me as a human. It also endangers the LGBT community. Could I have articulated my frustration in a better fashion? Undoubtedly. For that I apologize, but I stand by the overall point."

I think she missed the #SorryNotSorry hashtag there.

Listening to this guy gave me a headache, but I suppose his arguments are "worth sharing." Brace yourselves, ladies and gentlemen. Harlem ATLAH Missionary Church Pastor James Manning has publicly announced the secret ingredient that Starbucks uses in their lattes: sodomites' semen!

“Starbucks is a place where these types frequent and a lot of body fluids are exchanged there. But the thing that I was not aware of is that there has been information that has been released… what Starbucks was doing, is they were taking specimens of male semen, and they were putting it in the blends of their lattes. Now, this is the absolute truth.

"It was a big article about an investigation into Starbucks using male semen and putting it into the blends of coffee that they sell.

“I mean, can you imagine? And I believe that they were doing that. You know, Coca-Cola got started 100 years ago by using cocaine — they were actually using cocaine! — and they stayed off the federal government… because during the time they were using it there was no FDA…

“But the deal is… that Starbucks has been… legally accused of using male semen in their latte… you know, my suspicion is that they’re getting their semen from sodomites. That’s what my suspicion is. A University of Glasgow survey has recently revealed some curious trends in the sexual practices of "monogamous" young gay men.

During the GAYCON 2014, the 5th National Conference for Scotland on Gay and Bisexual Men’s Health and Wellbeing, a certain Nicola Boydell presented the findings she got from studies and interviews she conducted with 30 gay men with ages ranging from 18 to 29 years.

The question? What are their thoughts on condoms use. And here are some of the responses that she got:

“Anal sex is more risky than any other type of sex. But with a regular partner [it] is less risky than with a casual partner.”

“If it was just like a casual thing, I would always use condoms and then if we’re going out like, at the start, for like a couple of months, depending on the person, we would use a condom. Then after that, if like we trusted each other, if I trusted him, we wouldn’t.”

“At the moment we’re monogamous. But at the same time, we both appreciate other men, and there have been occasions when we’ve both been together with other guys, but we use protection in that instance.”

“I don’t think we’ve ever sat down and discussed [monogamy], but I know that’s… we must have discussed it in bits over time, because I just know that’s, that’s the case.” 

Boydell concluded that while some of the guys said both they underwent HIV testing before stopping the use of condoms, a good number relied on the belief that if one of them was HIV-positive, he would tell the other partner. These men also said that being monogamous is enough to make them feel safe.

Just for the record, a 2010 study made and published by San Francisco State University showed that primary partners are a major source of HIV-infection.

Harvard University Offers A Course On Anal Sex

Harvard University, one of the best academic institutions in the world, is taking education a notch higher by offering a course called "What What in the Butt: Anal Sex 101" as part of its annual Sex Week!

Here's the information material:

Starting this Monday, Sex Week attendees can sit-in on events that range from a sexual health career panel on Tuesday evening, to a class offered that afternoon called “What What in the Butt: Anal Sex 101.”

“Come learn everything about anal sex from the experts of Good Vibrations, a sex-positive store located right in Brookline!” reads the course description posted on the official Harvard Sex Week website. “They will dispel myths about anal sex and give you insight into why people do it and how to do it well.”

According to the website, topics that will be covered during the class include anal anatomy and the potential for pleasure for all genders; how to talk about it with a partner; basic preparation and hygiene; lubes, anal toys, and safer sex; anal penetration for beginners, and much more!

“Learn the facts about this exciting yet often misunderstood form of pleasure, find out the common mistakes people make, and get all your questions answered!” continues the course description.

This year’s session marks the fourth consecutive run of Sex Week at the school, which is coordinated annually by Sexual Health Education & Advocacy throughout Harvard College, or SHEATH, a student-run group that describes itself as being “dedicated to empowering the Harvard community to explore their experiences with love and sex by providing comprehensive programming addressing a wide range of issues relating to sex, relationships, dating, sexual health, and sexuality.”

How cool is that? I wonder if it will be all theoretical, or if there are demonstrations and practical exams involved! And who are the guest speakers? In any case, this sure looks like a very interesting class.

HIV/AIDS awareness is very important, now more than ever. Different actions and movements have been made in an effort to spread awareness of this disease, and that includes the availability of condoms in more places, as well as ads that give out important information.

The past couple of years brought us the rise of gay social media applications where gay guys are able to interact, connect, and meet. Loosely called "hookup apps," these sites also enable like-minded guys to engage in sexual activities. As such, HIV/AIDS awareness in such social media sites needs to be given extra attention.

As it turns out, there has been a recent meeting between reps from gay oriented apps like Scruff and Grinder, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) and the CDC. They are working on having HIV/AIDS outreach projects via these channels.

According to a report the SFAF, some notable changes will soon come, including:

- App and site owners will push out regularly updated information about HIV testing to their millions of users
- App owners pledge to reduce stigma surrounding HIV positive men, possible including options for profiles like "undetectable" and "poz friendly"
- Grindr CEO Joel Simkhai calls the partnership with SFAF "just an extension of the great work we've already done," which includes not allowing users to promote unsafe sex on their profiles. 

Hopefully, these movements will help reduce the risk of further spreading this dreaded disease. Knowing is half the battle, and information dissemination is truly essential in our battle against AIDS and HIV.

So there's a new "hot mugshot" going around online, and it's that of a certain Sean Kory. This 29 year old guy was reportedly arrested in Santa Cruz, California after he attacked a guy dressed up as a Fox news reporter.

Let's take a moment and glorify yet another criminal by wasting our precious time reading about him.

According to reports, Sean shouted "I hate Fox News," grabbed the costumed guy's mic, put it down his pants and sexually played around with the prop. He then went on to attack the costumed Fox news reporter using a tennis racquet.

The victim requested for the assistance of the cops, who then arrested Sean. That's when the mugshot was taken and it somehow went viral afterwards.

"We Reserve The Right To Refuse Service To Homosexuals"

This is so wrong on so many levels. A t-shirt which reads "we reserve the right to refuse service to homosexuals" was donned by quite number of bigots in an anti-gay rally in Houston, Texas. But the most terrible part? The shirts were worn by kids who were probably brainwashed or forced by their irresponsible parents. What decent parent teaches their kids to hate on other people?

The rally was organized by anti-gay groups who wanted to stand against openly gay mayor Annise Parker. The Moonie Times has this report:

Thousands showed their support Sunday the five Houston pastors who drew national attention for challenging the city’s now-withdrawn effort to subpoena their sermons. I Stand Sunday, a combination church service and religious-freedom rally, drew an estimated 6,000 congregants to hear a high-profile line-up of speakers at Grace Community Church in Houston. The two-hour event was simulcast to nearly 700 churches and 3,000 home groups. While the pastors were the focus, speakers warned that the Houston subpoenas represent only the latest example of a growing threat to religious liberty in the United States. “This was never really about subpoenas, it was not about sermons or speeches. This was about political intimidation,” said Family Research Council president Tony Perkins. “It was about trying to silence the voices of the churches and the pastors.”

And that, gentlemen, is how we raise future homophobes and criminals.

Nan Hayworth, a Republican Congressional candidate for New York's 19th Congressional District seat is running against openly gay Democratic incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney. She has been previously painted as an extremist, so she decided to make an ad campaign featuring her gay son Will.

The ad begins with Will looking at the camera, and saying the following words:

"As a gay man, coming to terms with who I am wasn't easy. But my parents love me for who I am and for whom I love. So when I hear vicious negative attacks against Nan Hayworth, I have to speak out.”


“Nan Hayworth is no extremist. She's my mom. She's kind. She's compassionate. She's always been there for me. And she'll always be there for you.”

At this point, Nan Hayworth joins the screen, gives Will a kiss and a hug, and says: "I'm Nan Hayworth, and I approve this message." Will ends the video by saying: "And I do too."







The Human Rights Campaign, however, does not think that the ad was effective. In a statement to the Huffington Post, a representative of the organization said:

"Of course Nan Hayworth loves her gay son. That's not what's at issue here. The problem is her lack of support for legal protections provided by marriage for everyone else who isn't lucky enough to be related to an elected official. When Nan Hayworth had the chance to be a true fighter for LGBT issues in Congress, she was AWOL."

HRC also added that Hayworth refused to support marriage equality, did not sign on to legislation that would have repealed the federal ban on same-sex marriage, and did not back a bill that would have extended the immigration benefits that heterosexual couples receive to same-sex partners of U.S. citizens.

A 38-year-old guy has been arrested after he reportedly hacked into his ex-boyfriend's school district email account and sent out nude photos to students, teachers, and faculty members. Davide Galvan allegedly sent out naked photos of teacher Richard Rosa to quite a number of people associated with the John Muir High School in Pasadena, California.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

David Galvan, 38, was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully accessing science teacher Richard Rosa's school district email account and sending the photographs on July 10 while the teacher was out of the country.

The email, with the subject line “Enjoy,” contained four nude photographs of Rosa.

The motivation: Galvan was angry about their relationship ending, according to police Lt. Terysa Rojas.

The photographs prompted a police investigation and Pasadena Unified Supt. Jon Gundry to issue an apology to the email’s recipients.

Galvan was charged on five charges including identity theft, sending obscene matter and impersonating Rosa. He supposedly tried to evade arrest by going to another state, but he was tracked down by US Marshals in Hillsboro, Oregon.

This should serve as reminder to all of us to be very careful whom we send our naked photos to. It's hard to imagine that someone who loves us would end up spreading our private moments around, but it does happen.

A University of Montreal study revealed that gay men who "bottom for several partners" are exposed to higher prostate cancer risks compared to their heterosexual or "top" counterparts.

The report is based on a survey of around 3,200 men. Half of the group had suffered from prostate cancer between 2005 and 2009. The team of epidermiologist Marie-Élise Parent first found out that heterosexual men who had sex with over 20 women in their lifetimes are 28% less likely to develop the cancer compared to straight men who don't have sex with as many  partners. They think that a regular release of ejaculate could aid in the prevention of prostate cancer.

Gay men who bottom, however, are facing higher risks.

Gay guys who bottomed for over 20 male partners more than doubled their risk for prostate cancer. The risk of developing a more aggressive form of the cancer is also increased by 500%.

The research is not exactly clear on the mechanics of these findings, but they speculate that constant bottoming traumatizes the prostate. This results to the release of a prostate-specific antigen, a chemical that points to cancer in the area.

If this is true, then bottoms need to be more careful and should have their prostates checked once in a while. I wonder, however, if the research is based on the number of different partners (as it implies), or the frequency of engaging in sex (even if it's just with one or two partners)? Also, if ejaculating regularly aids in prostate cancer prevention, then would that somehow cancel off the negative effects of bottoming?

This is huge!

Apple's CEO Tim Cook just came out as gay, and he did so with a blast! He had this to say in an interview with Business Insider:

"While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me."

It was a unique approach to coming out because he chose a business magazine instead of a lifestyle magazine to cover his story. He also made sure that his being gay is seen as something that aided him in his business interactions and dealings.

"Being gay has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to be in the minority and provided a window into the challenges that people in other minority groups deal with every day. It’s made me more empathetic, which has led to a richer life. It’s been tough and uncomfortable at times, but it has given me the confidence to be myself, to follow my own path, and to rise above adversity and bigotry. It’s also given me the skin of a rhinoceros, which comes in handy when you’re the CEO of Apple."

There has been a lot of speculation about Cook's sexuality, and now those rumors can finally be put to rest.

Be careful with your hook ups, especially if you meet your guy via social networking sites and dating apps! You never know how the night would end. Sometimes, it may not turn out as well as you would like to.

A guy in London, for instance, was assaulted and robbed after an ill-fated Grindr hookup. The 26 year old victim met the suspect online and decided to invite him over for fun. The suspect, a Caucasian guy in his mid twenties, arrived at the victim's place at around 5PM September 28. At one point he began texting someone then announced that he needed to leave.

As it turns out, a second suspect was waiting outside the door with a cattle prod. When the victim showed the first suspect to the door, he was surprised when the second guy used violence on him and threatened to electrocute him using the cattle prod if he didn't surrender his valuables.

Detective Constable April Smart released this statement:

"The victim thankfully did not suffer serious physical injuries but has been left very shaken by this incident.

"I am keen to identify the two suspects as soon as possible and I am appealing to anyone who may know who they are to contact the police.

"Whilst we have not connected this incident to any other reported to us, I must consider that the suspects could have committed this type of offence previously and I would appeal to anyone who may have been a victim of this type of offence to contact the police, where they will be treated with the utmost sensitivity.

"I would like to take this opportunity to reassure the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community that we are doing everything we can to arrest these men and have followed and eliminated a number of potential leads and inquiries to date.

"I would urge everyone who uses the services of online dating apps and sites to take steps to help them to stay safe whilst meeting strangers."


It pays to be extra vigilant when dealing with strangers.
