Gone Girl Review: Don't Watch With Your Psycho Wife

Synopsis:
The movie was directed by David Fincher and was based on the Gillian Flynn bestseller. It tackles the secrets and complications of a modern marriage. During their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful and perfect wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. He goes home finding that his house was "broken into," with his wife nowhere to be found. The blissful marriage begins to crumble under the solid investigation of the police as well as the critical involvement (and judgment) of media. Lies surface, betrayals unfold, and secrets begin to leak out. Everyone in the world is asking: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

Casting:
Rosamund Pike was phenomenal as the "perfect girl gone psycho" Amy Dunne. You will fall in love with her character from the very start, as she is portrayed to be someone who is just short from achieving the accomplishments of her alter ego "Amazing Amy." It makes perfect sense why his husband would be head over heels in love with her. You get so invested in her character that you end up heartbroken when her dark side is revealed. Pike flawlessly executes the "psycho bitch" character that the audience is brought from adoration to disgust in a snap.

Ben Affleck, on the other hand, had an "ok" portrayal of the role of Nick Dunne. I suppose nothing much could be done with the role, as it calls for a loving husband who has a secret of his own. He was convincing as a laid back, jobless husband who unwittingly finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation. You pity the character, but the joyride of emotions you will find with Amy Dunne is nowhere present in Nick Dunne's character. I personally couldn't care less what happens to him (I was secretly hoping Nick and Amy plotted the whole thing right from the start).

Neil Patrick Harris also played a short role on this film. His role was that of a rich High School boyfriend of Amy, whose character is also a bit shady. Was he really a stalker? Was he also a victim? What are his motivations for helping Amy out? Did he have evil designs in his mind? Sadly, my mind just wouldn't stop associating Neil Patrick with his "Barney" from "How I Met Your Mother." I keep expecting him to pop a wide grin, and ask Amy to "wait for it... wait for it..."

Memorable Scenes:
I really liked the movie and there are a couple of memorable scenes that stuck to my mind. First, the bed scene between Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris. It was just so wrong on so many levels, and it will make you think twice about going to bed with anyone, ever. It was probably one of the highlights of the film, showing just how far Amy Dunne would go to achieve her personal goals.

I also liked the simplicity of the scene where Nick Dunne was conversing with his twin sister while playing a board game. It was real, and it was strong. One would think that a spinning number roulette would distract the audience from what's going on in the conversation, but it somehow gave an eerie vibe.

The "diary scenes" were also executed well. I particularly like the part where Amy was recounting how she set up the "murder scene" and how she came up with the plan. Genius. I won't be surprised if real housewives get a tip or two from this movie and end up framing up their cheating husbands as well.

Misses:
I was really looking forward to the "full frontal" scene of Ben Affleck. Heck, that would have been one of the real highlights of the movie for me. Unfortunately, it looks like local censorship has decided to take it off from the movie. I suppose I will just have to wait for the DVD release.

Overall:
Definitely a must see movie. It was a well-written story that was executed well. While there are some misses and flaws, the entertainment value and good story-telling far outweigh them. I wouldn't advise cheating husbands to watch this movie with their wives, especially if they have the makings of turning into a "psycho bitch." You should probably just watch this movie alone, or with a group of friends.
