Michael was stopped for speeding at 84mph where the speed limit is only 45mph. This happened at the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore. This would be his second arrest for DUI, the first being in 2004. He was 19 and given an 18 month probation.

When asked for a statement, he had this to say: “I recognize the seriousness of this mistake. I've learned from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life.”

A spokesperson from USA Swimming had this to say about the incident: "The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool."

It was also reported by TMZ that Michael came from an 8 hour gambling session at a Baltimore casino prior to the incident. Casino sources reveal that Michael was at the Horeshoe Casino at around 5PM and left at around 1AM.

Always remember: Safety first! Don't drink and drive! You are not only endangering your own life, but the lives and well-being of other people as well. Ask someone to be a designated driver. Or better yet, take a cab. (Or if you are Michael Phelps, you can probably afford to book a nearby hotel room).
