The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! #JamesFranco

by Discreet Serpent

People (celebrities included) have been joining yet another online craze, but this one is for a good cause! Say hello to the “Ice Bucket Challenge.”

The challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video. The participants then nominate other people to do just the same, in the effort to increase ALS awareness. These videos are posted on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Those who are unable to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice.

This video of actor James Franco sure is hot! I wouldn't mind seeing more videos (with less clothing) from other celebrities! You can also search for Ice Bucket Challenge videos of Justin Bieber, Oprah, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lady Gaga, Chris Pratt, and countless others.

It sure looks like awareness about the disease has improved. I, for one, was not aware that such  a disease existed. It is great to know that social media can still be used to spread good and not just negativity.

What is ALS?
ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn’t until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease. Ending the career of one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, the disease is still most closely associated with his name. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons  die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Click here for more information
