Why Make a Sex Video?

by Discreet Serpent

The second part of the "alleged" Paolo Bediones sex tape has made its rounds online today. Much longer than the first version (over 16 minutes this time), the video has gone viral and has been accessed and downloaded multiple times by netizens.

We got different reactions from Facebook and Twitter users, who shamelessly posted what they really felt about the video. Some people were aghast that such an act could be done. Others were excited and wanted to check out what the video was all about. Some netizens posted what they "learned" from watching, seemingly implying that they will use the same tactics in the future. Others took the opportunity to get hits or likes by posting links to access the video. Everyone has their own reasons, and I am not here to judge.

Why make a sex tape?

Bediones (as well as other personalities who had similar experiences in the past) is a respectable person in his field. People, therefore, are wondering why he would put his reputation at stake and engage in such a risky act. What was he thinking? What do people get from making sex videos? Here are the most common answers (not necessarily applicable to Bediones):
  • Watching yourself on video appeals to your voyeurism and exhibitionism. It is thrilling to watch yourselves have sex. Imagine your enjoyment when you are watching porn. For some people, the excitement is elevated when they see themselves on video as it is more intimate for them.
  • Watching your own sex video can bring you and your partner closer together. You can have a "third person point of view" of your performance, and you can objectively think of ways to improve. You can critique yourselves and analyze the things that can be improved on.
  • For shy people, a sex tape can help with modesty and guide them with coming out of their shells. They can pretend to be porn stars, gaining self confidence in the process.
  • This intimate act can also validate how your partner really feels about you. People are usually insecure about their looks or weight or imperfections, but these become irrelevant once they see how these things do not matter to their partner.

Why is it a bad idea to make sex tapes

Needless to say, making a sex tape is highly risky and exposes you to the possibility of embarrassment and shame. If the tape goes into the hands of the wrong people, then you can say goodbye to your privacy. You will always be paranoid about people talking about you or watching you behind your back. It is a bad situation for celebrities, in particular. If not handled properly, it could spell the end of their careers. It would be a terrible way to live, and could lead to depression or withdrawal from society.

Retrieving deleted files

Deleting your files from your laptop would probably give you a sense of security. If the files are no longer in the trash bin, then they should be gone forever right?

Apparently, recovering these deleted files is much easier than it sounds. If an untrustworthy person gets access to your laptop (like the repairman or second hand buyer), they could easily run a program to retrieve your deepest and darkest secrets. I'm no techie, but here's a rundown of the process according to WikiHow:

  • Immediately stop accessing the drive. Don’t save or delete anything from your computer. Your chances of recovering the file are much higher if you don’t save anything new.
  • Download a data recovery program on another computer, or a different drive. Make sure that you don’t save it to the drive that you need to recover a file from, or you may overwrite the file you need to recover.
  • Run the recovery program. While every program is different, they all follow the same basic steps. Make sure that you don’t install the program to the same drive that you are trying to recover from.
  • Perform a deep scan. Some programs will give you the option to perform a deep scan while looking for files. This will take significantly longer, but may result in more files found.
  • Browse for the file you want. Once the scan has returned results, look through the list to see if your file was recovered.
Sounds simple enough, but again, I'm no expert so I don't know if this actually works. Though in theory, it sounds doable.

Will I consider making one?

I personally have toyed with the idea of making a sex video on several occasions. I am fortunate (or unfortunate?) to have been with partners who are prudent enough NOT to want to film themselves during sex. Hence, I don't think anyone will see me on screen anytime soon. But will I do it if I had the option to? Perhaps. But they will have to be on my terms (I keep the laptop, no other copies). Also, I will have to make sure that the recording device and the laptop remain in my custody and not fall into the hands of other people.
